Families who support a loved one with a developmental disability may qualify for home-based services through New York’s OPWDD waiver program. Our team helps patients and families understand the requirements, apply for Medicaid if needed, and connect with approved agencies that can guide them through enrollment.
OPWDD services allow eligible individuals to receive support at home from someone they trust. Most relatives can serve as caregivers under OPWDD, except parents and legal guardians. We assist families in navigating the program rules and understanding who may qualify.
Who Qualifies for OPWDD Services
OPWDD supports New York residents who have a developmental disability such as autism, cerebral palsy, an intellectual disability, or similar conditions. There is no age restriction for the person receiving care. Eligibility is based on diagnosis, functional needs, and Medicaid requirements.
If the patient is not enrolled in Medicaid, we guide families through the necessary steps to move forward with OPWDD services.
Caregiver Eligibility Under OPWDD
OPWDD allows most relatives to become caregivers, including extended family members and close family friends. Parents and legal guardians cannot serve as paid caregivers, but another family member may qualify. Our team helps you identify who in the family is eligible and supports them through the onboarding process.
Support We Provide
We assist families with understanding the OPWDD application steps, completing Medicaid enrollment when necessary, and connecting with approved agencies that manage the program. This includes helping families gather required documents, preparing for eligibility reviews, and understanding what to expect once services begin.
OPWDD services offer families the ability to keep their loved one at home with a trusted caregiver while receiving structured support through the state’s developmental disability system.
